The RAD was divided into two main branches: the male branch, which was responsible for construction and agricultural work, and the female branch, which was responsible for domestic work and nursing. Members of the RAD were required to wear uniforms and to salute Nazi officials.

The RAD was used by the Nazi government to mobilize young people for the war effort. In 1939, the RAD was placed under the control of the Wehrmacht, the German armed forces. Members of the RAD were used to build fortifications, to clear mines, and to transport supplies.

The RAD was disbanded in 1945, at the end of World War II.
