Description
Authentic U.S. Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Socket Bayonet – Indian Wars Era
Detailed Description
This is an original U.S. Model 1873 Socket Bayonet, specifically designed for the .45-70 caliber Springfield “Trapdoor” Rifle. This is a quintessential piece of American frontier history, used by infantry units throughout the late 19th century.
Key Features:
Markings: Features a crisp, deeply struck “U.S.” property mark on the shank, with a small “s” inspectorโs stamp directly beneath it.
Design: The blade is a classic triangular “spike” style with deep fluting on all three sides to reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity.
Mechanism: Includes the original rotating locking ring (clasp) which is fully functional and used to secure the socket to the rifle’s front sight/bayonet stud.
Condition: This specimen retains a smooth, dark-mottled patina. The metal is solid with no significant pitting, and the tip remains sharp. It is a “clean” example that has clearly been well-cared for over the last 150 years.
