Brief History of Ahnenerbe and the SS:

The Ahnenerbe, whose full name was "Studiengesellschaft für Geistesurgeschichte‚ Deutsches Ahnenerbe e.V." (meaning "Ancestral Heritage Society for the Study of Ancient Germanic History"), was an institute in Nazi Germany founded in 1935. Its purpose was to research the archaeological and cultural history of the Aryan race. It aimed to demonstrate that mythological Nordic populations had once ruled the world and thereby provide justification for the Nazi's racist ideology.

Led by Heinrich Himmler, one of the most powerful men in Nazi Germany and the head of the SS (Schutzstaffel), the Ahnenerbe conducted numerous archaeological, anthropological, and ethnological expeditions. The SS, or Schutzstaffel, started as Hitler's personal bodyguard unit but grew into one of the most powerful and feared organizations in Nazi Germany. They were involved in many of the most heinous crimes of the Nazi regime, including the Holocaust.

The Ahnenerbe's activities ranged from legitimate scholarly investigations to pseudoscientific endeavors. Many of the results were used to promote Nazi ideologies of racial purity and supremacy. By the end of World War II, many of the Ahnenerbe's leaders and researchers were held accountable for their roles in the war, including participation in war crimes.

The Ahnenerbe footed compote from 1941 is likely a rare piece, considering the specific historical period it represents. Items like this compote may be of significant interest to historians and collectors due to their association with this infamous organization and era.
